How Bulgarian pay works

Employers agree a gross salary β€” the amount before deductions. The employee's social contributions and income tax are deducted from it, and what's left lands in the bank account as net salary. Separately, the employer pays its own contributions on the same insurable income, which makes hiring cost more than the gross figure alone β€” see the employer cost calculator.

Contributions and tax apply to the insurable income, which is capped (€2300 per month from August 1, 2026). At higher salaries, the portion above the cap is still taxed but not insured further.

Frequently asked questions

How is net salary calculated in Bulgaria?

The employee's social security contributions (13.78% total β€” health, pension and supplementary pension insurance) are deducted from gross pay, applied to the insurable income. A flat 10% income tax is then deducted from what remains (the taxable base). What's left is take-home pay.

What are the social security contribution rates for 2026?

32.7% of insurable income in total β€” 13.78% paid by the employee and 18.92% by the employer (for labor category III, born after 1959). Health insurance is 8% total (4.8% employer / 3.2% employee), with pension and supplementary pension contributions making up the rest.

Is there a cap on insurable income?

Yes. From August 1, 2026, the maximum monthly insurable income is €2300. Gross pay above that amount is still taxed at 10%, but isn't insured further β€” so at higher salaries, net income grows faster relative to gross.

What is the minimum wage in 2026?

From January 1, 2026, the minimum monthly wage for full-time work is €620.2 (1,213 BGN).

Are salaries now quoted in euro?

Bulgaria adopted the euro on January 1, 2026 at the fixed rate 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN. Dual pricing in both lev and euro remains mandatory until August 8, 2026, which is why this calculator shows results in both currencies.
