Frequently asked questions

How is VAT calculated?

To add VAT: VAT = net amount × rate (20% or 9%), and the gross price is net plus VAT. To remove VAT from a gross price: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate), and VAT is the difference between the two.

When does the reduced 9% rate apply?

The reduced 9% rate applies to hotel accommodation, restaurant and catering services, baby food and diapers, and books. Everything else taxable falls under the standard 20% rate.

Are any goods zero-rated for VAT?

Yes — 0% VAT applies mainly to exports outside the EU and intra-community supplies between VAT-registered businesses (with a valid VIES number for the buyer).
