Lev or euro β what actually changes
The BGN-EUR rate is irrevocably fixed at 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN β same purchasing power, different unit. Social contributions (32.7% total, 13.78% of which is the employee's share) and the flat 10% income tax are calculated the same way as before β see the full breakdown in the salary calculator. Is my salary still paid in lev, or in euro now?
Employers set and pay salaries in euro from January 1, 2026 onward. If your contract still lists an amount in lev, it converts at the fixed rate 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN β with no change in real value.
Why does my net salary in euro look like an "odd" number?
Because the 1.95583 rate rarely produces a round number on conversion. For example, 1000 BGN becomes exactly β¬511.29. That is expected β it comes from the fixed, unrounded rate.
Did contribution or tax rates change because of the euro?
No β contribution rates (13.78% for the employee) and the 10% flat income tax stay the same. Only the unit the amounts are quoted in has changed.
