How compound interest works

With monthly compounding, each month's interest is added to the principal and itself starts earning interest the following month. Over a longer term the effect is noticeably larger than simple interest, especially with a regular monthly contribution.

Frequently asked questions

How is interest on a deposit calculated?

This calculator assumes monthly compounding — the most common model for Bulgarian bank deposits. Some deposits pay interest only at maturity without compounding, which gives a slightly lower result.

Is there tax on deposit interest?

Yes — interest income on bank deposits held by individuals is taxed at 10% withheld automatically by the bank. This calculator shows the gross interest before that tax.

Why add a monthly contribution?

If you regularly save a fixed amount each month (a savings plan) rather than just a lump sum, the "monthly contribution" field shows the real effect of compounding on your balance over time.
